The corporation is equally owned by six First Nations, with each community having a member who sits on the Board as their representative. The Board controls an annual budget and has a complementary staff consisting General Manager, Road Inspector, Administrator, and Gate Keepers. All road construction is contracted out to local First Nations as the corporation does not have the labour pool or equipment to do this work.

Corporate History The Asheweig Winter Road Corporation was founded in February 12, 1998. The Corporation is Not-for-Profit and is owned by six First Nations, including Kasabonika Lake Kingfisher Lake Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (Big Trout Lake), Wapekeka (Angling Lake), Wawakapewin (Long Dog) and Wunnumin Lake First Nations. All Asheweig Winter Road Corporation member communities are situated north of all existing all-weather road, known as Highway ###, which extends all the way to Windigo Lake. The winter road network was conceived as an alternative to air transport, in an effort to reduce the cost of mobilizing materials to the north.

Currently, the only means of access for our member communities is by air transport, water routes and the seasonal winter roads. While the Ministry of Transportation has constructed and maintained gravel airstrips within the majority of northern communities, an annual winter road is constructed by Asheweig Winter Road Corporation for supplying the Asheweig communities with bulk materials and large volumes of fuels. The construction of the winter road lessens the overall cost of large items and fuel by reducing the freight costs associated with flying these materials.

The purpose of the corporation is to draw together the First Nations to have the winter road constructed as a combined effort rather then one First Nation having the responsibility for a section that may not be completed for variety of reasons.
